Billion 7402NX
4 Port 802.11N Wireless Router with ADSL Modem, Ethernet WAN Port, USB 3G support, 4 port giga switch & VPN
Comments: A well featured and extremely competitve 802.11n wireless ADSL modem with support for USB 3G modems*. The 4 port giga switch is great to see at this price level too! These are sure to be popular. New feature added October 09 is the ability to convert LAN Port 1 to an Ethernet WAN port. Either the ADSL, Ethernet WAN port or the 3G connection can be selected as the primary connection and any one can be selected as a failover. Load sharing is not featured at this stage but may be added in a future firmware release. Winner of PC User magazine's Best Buy award October 2008. "this one has pretty much everything a power user could ask for" * Click here for 3G modem compatibility list (not all 3G modems are compatible) Click here to test drive the configuration menus.

This router falls over and needs a good long rest at times. It is most likely temperature related. Really though, you should not need the Air Conditioner blasting just for the sake of your router. |

I’ve now had this modem/router for over six months. It works great when it is running, but occasionally it locks up and requires a reboot to fix it. This is a know problem, but (as of November 2009) the 5.53s.5 firmware has not fixed it. It seems random, but it happens to me roughly once a month. Until the problem is fixed, I can’t recommend this modem/router if you want a device that you can depend on it to stay up and running without the occasional manual intervention. |

The router is fine, like other Billion routers, but again the Wireless performance is poor. I imagine that many users wouldn’t notice, but that’s because they don’t know what they are missing. I am lucky enough to have used many other brands of wireless access points, such as Belkin, Netgear, etc, and their wireless performance is FAR better. The wireless signal on these other brands is actually STABLE. On the Billions, the wireless signal is often prone to weird fluctuations, and the range is no where near as reliable as on other brands. And yet Billion claim nothing is wrong with their wireless, they just say "no known issues". Yeah, right. Whatever wireless chipsets and drivers they are using simply are not good for access points. It might be Ralink that they use. I’m not sure. But whatever chipsets they use, it is certainly poor -- at least in comparison. |

The Billion 7402NX works with TPG’s IPTV service with a wired ethernet cable, but does not work over wireless. According to posts on the Whirlpool.net.au forum, you need to increase the "multicast rate" for IPTV to work over wireless, but the 7402NX does not expose this parameter to be changed.
To configure it for IPTV, go to Advanced > Configuration > WAN > WAN Profile to add a new profile with: Profile Port = ADSL; Protocol = Pure Bridge; VPI/VCI = 0/35; ATM class = UBR; Encap method = LLC Bridged; Acceptable frame type = acceptall; Filter type = All. And also go to Advanced > Configuration > Advanced > IGMP to enable both IGMP Forwarding and IGMP Snooping. This is using the "5.53.s5" firmware on "Solos-W USB/ADSL-M/WN v1.00" hardware and TPG’s setup of IPTV as of 2009-03-10. |

Like others in the 7402 series this is a solid modem with usable QoS. However the wireless performance is poor when you have a few clients connected. Connecting two 802.11n clients appears to crash the router under load. This router may need a couple of firmware updates still before it stabilises. |
